Hi All,

There has been a lot of chatter about the possibility of mixing up the sides for the winter season only (as usual every year!). My initial reaction, when I first heard about this idea, was to say no. I love playing with the Selects, they are like my extended family. I would not want to lose the 'after-game-social' aspect of the summer season. But in the winter, the games start/finish late and people have to work the next day so the majority, I would say, go home right after the game.

The main reason for mixing up the sides would be to make the league more friendly, to maybe take the edge off some of the rivalries. I have played with most teams this season and I enjoyed meeting other players. I do think it would help to reduce tensions on fouls. Currently, there are poeple that make threats and 'vow to get revenge' in the remainder of the game when they get fouled instead of shaking hands and getting on with the game.

The thought of making changes is scary (even when they have been/ might be positive) but if it doesn't work out, we can always take a step back next year. But if we don't try, we'll never know. Maybe someone knows of another league that have done this and have good/bad things to say about such a change?

Whatever happens, let's let the refs call the game without the back-chat (even if they make a mistake, they are only human... despite what you may think!) and when you get fouled, express yourself to the opponent on what you think he did wrong, but then shake hands and get on with the game (without the threats).

Cheers,
Harj

Harjit,

It is an interesting thought and you are right, an important reason we show up is the love of the game but also to meet familiar faces and who over the years have become friends.

So let’s look at what we want to promote and eliminate:

Promote: fair play, sportsmanship, equal play time, competitive yet fun games, growth, camaraderie, a chance for all to compete (teams that are fairly balanced)

Eliminate: disrespect, violence, frustration, inequalities

Would mixing up the teams achieve that ? I am not sure that the individuals who don’t understand that concept would change their behaviour in such a set-up...actually I think that they probably would care even less since they are part of a bunch of unknowns. Would we have balanced teams...probably not since a random distribution will create stronger and weaker teams.

So what’s the solution ? I think it is to eliminate the OBSESSION of winning at all costs.

1) Allow your teammates to play at different positions during the year (including goalie)
2) Allow-encourage your players to change teams if they want during the winter without being perceived as a traitor

3) By allowing all teams to make the play-offs, we remove the NEED to win every game and permit every game to be a learning experience !
4) At the end of the year, why don’t we divide the teams into 3 groups depending on their standing and make 2 or 3 playoff groups (group A, B and C). That way you can still finish last and win your group championship (if it makes you happy)
5) Discipline and respect come from within. Let’s have one player per game wear the captain’s armband and be the ambassadeur for their teams fairplay, talking to the ref, etc...Change the captain at every game to spread the responsibility.
6) Limit the goal differential to 3 regardless of the score...so we avoid the 10-1 blowouts...a team can still choose to win 10-1 but it will only be counted as a 4-1 win

Just a couple of ideas

Hate to get involved BUT, I know of two leagues that switch players/teams up every year, one is Point Claire hockey and the other is a soccer league in which I play in (along with Doug and a couple of other LOGS players). It works well, with no issues.

I played in 2 tournaments this summer with the LOGS, 97% of the players on the team, I had only competed against. Getting to know them during the different tourneys was cool and then to play against them during the regular season, only added to the on field camaraderie and competitiveness (but with a different perspective, for now I knew them)! So I am all for it and yes I will miss my Devils, and as long as we have summer for me to reconnect with them, this works for me.

Michael.

I know this is really late, but I'm putting some input as I'm only reading it now.

As you all know, I've subbed for a lot of teams, and with that said, if you're looking for friendship and camaraderie, then switching teams up is the way to go.
I love playing on the Rangers and love our team, but I've met many new friends playing with the other teams.
I think they all took me in as one of their players, and I felt like one.
As for having a blow-out of say 10-0 or whatever, I'm fine with it, some teams are stronger than other, and it does happen. but for those teams who always seem to lose, it does get annoying.

7 games into the winter season and there is a 15 point spread between the first and last-placed teams. I'm beginning to agree that mixing the teams is a good idea, but only for the indoor league.

The inequality is greatest in the indoor game where skills are more important. Some teams have brought on one highly skilled player after the next. While we want to increase the level of play in the league, when those players are going on only two or three teams, that is not good for the league. It produces games that are not competitive and therefore eliminates a major aspect of the fun.

I also think that mixing the teams up would produce more respect amongst players and cut down on fouls and dangerous play. You would get to know more players personally and there would be less animosity.

The summer league is different, with more camaraderie after the games, as has been said already. But the winter league is all about the soccer and we want to create the best games possible.

We all want to have fun and improve. Mixing the teams in the winter league would help with both.

quick reply...
9 games in and only getting worse for some teams (18 point difference now).

Olympics have a strong team and keep getting new strong players making them even stronger (total of 53 goals so far this season, in 9 games, compared to Pacemakers at 15).
Casimir alone has more goals scored than the 3 bottom teams in our league.
as Kevin mentioned, playing teams like this makes you want to sit down on the field and just let them have their fun cause it makes no difference if we're on the pitch or not.
some teams have more older players than others and makes it very hard to compete.
but mixing the teams would have to be actually thought out and not just thrown in like the exhibition game we had before the holidays.
there we a few teams that had all young strong players and other teams with all older players, which made it Impossible to even get the ball across the half way mark.

we'll see what happens next year...

I spoke with a friend last night over how his hockey teams deal with the teams and players.
As with our league, they have really good players, to not soo good players.
They have been playing together for almost 20 years now, and when they started they all had their teams which people made up themselves, picking friends and the better players, and some teams wre stuck with bad players and never won any games.
what they did was they rated the players 1-10, then seperated the different numbers into each of the teams, so each team would have an equal number of level 10 players as they would of level 1 players.
this made each team very much equal and each of the games were that much closer to each other in scores and stats.
they did it annonomously, so the lower players wouldn't know what their stat was and wouldn't feel bad about it.
they also re-made the teams every yearor two so everyone got to know one another, and he said it made a real comradery between the whole league.

sounds interesting
